Sony Xperia Z With Android 4.1 Launched In India For Rs 39,000

Sony has just launched its flagship (http://www.sonymobile.com/in/products/phones/xperia-z/) Xperia Z smartphone in India at an event in Delhi. Running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), the 3G device is powered by a 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU that is complemented by the Adreno 320 GPU to ensure that this should be good at gaming. 2 GB of RAM should be enough to give enough room for several apps to run simultaneously and smoothly. A 13 mp rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and Full HD capture is there in addition to a 2 mp front camera that can serve for video calling.

Here are the specifications:
* Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), Google Play Store.
* Micro-SIM, GSM 2G (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), UMTS 3G (2100 MHz).
* 5" OptiContrast capacitive 10-point multi-touch screen with pixel dimensions of 1920x1080, BRAVIA Engine 2.

* 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064+MDM9215M CPU and Adreno 320 GPU.
* 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, Up to 32 GB microSD support.
* 13 megapixel rear auto-focus Exmor RS camera with LED flash and Full HD recording.
* 2 megapixel front Exmor R camera for video calling.
* Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA, A-GPS, GLONASS, NFC.
* Micro-USB 2.0, 3.5 mm audio jack, FM Radio, NO HDMI.
* 2330 mAh battery with talk times up to 11 hours (2G) and 14 hours (3G).
* 5.5" (h) x 2.8" (w) x 0.31" (7.9 mm) (d), 146 grams.

Sony has boasted of the water and dust resistance of this phone in addition to resistance to scratches. The front and rear surface has glass, similar to that of the iPhone 4S, while it is quite thin at just 7.9 mm. The BRAVIA 2 Engine claims to produce sharper and brighter images via optimisation and the company claims that the screen can even be read under sunlight. Fitting Full HD pixels in a 5" Reality Display should produce crisp images, but the smartphone does not feature an HDMI-out, thus leaving the user to consume videos from the device itself, rather than providing the option of putting the images on an external HD display if they so desire.

The Xperia Z should compete well against the Samsung GALAXY S III and the iPhone 5 as far as the specifications are concerned. It is definitely more pocket-able than the SGS3, and almost as much as the iPhone 5. The primary camera with the Exmor RS sensor is supposed to be superior when compared to most mobile camera sensors and the results should restate this when a review is done. The Full HD display of the Xperia Z has a higher resolution with a 448 PPI pixel density — higher than both the competitors. Combined with the BRAVIA Engine 2 and OptiContrast (similar to Nokia's ClearBlack), the images should appear better, at least in theory. Additionally, it is protected against the elements (dust and water) — something that none of the two competitors claim to have.

Slated to be available from 12th March, the Xperia Z will be available in black, white, and purple. While Sony has launched its flagship smartphone today for Rs 39,000, it is currently available for (http://www.flipkart.com/sony-xperia-z/p/itmdgpeerfuxamrz) pre-order on Flipkart.com at the same price along with a 16 GB SanDisk microSD card. This, therefore, appears to be a better deal than the other two competitors and if it does catch the consumer's fancy, it could help bring Sony back as a major player into the smartphone race.
